The town of Paterson

Historically a railway station, Paterson is at the centre of game reserve country. The town is surrounded by eight of the most renowned and luxurious private game reserves in the Eastern Cape, and a few farms with beautiful old houses, livestock and grazing wildlife. First time on safari? Paterson is perfect. The beauty of Paterson lies in its bushveld thickets and conservation success story.

After centuries of unrestrained hunting and industrial agriculture this part of the Eastern Cape, which was once home to the Big Five and many wild species, became a derelict landscape. The area was rewilded by private conservationists, who set up beautiful lodges and villas in the hills and vales of the Sundays River Valley.
